Doing business in Mauritius
Mauritius is a stable democracy with a parliamentary government which is business friendly and for over the last 20 years has established the country as a leading, specialty stop in the business process outsourcing market.

Mauritius's major industry is service-based and its socio-economic drivers are largely founded on commercial alliances with Western countries. Wages at service agent level rank within the top 40% of earners in the country.

Located in the Indian Ocean on regular air and shipping lanes, Mauritius International Airport supports multiple carriers with daily flights to Europe, North America, Asia and Australia and Africa. It is regarded as a safe and secure location. And as a premier tropical island holiday destination, it is an excellent place to entertain clients and conduct getaways!

 People
The population of Mauritius is mostly of Indian origin and is a family-orientated society. There is a strong work ethic and people are encouraged to rise through businesses on pre-determined career paths. For this reason there is a low turnover and absenteeism rate and a strong attraction to participate in global businesses. Capitalism is encouraged and few union issues exist: there is no social net providing unemployment relief and people are expected to actively seek employment.

The official language, business language and medium of instruction is English. Extensive work has been done to neutralise local accents and to focus on delivering superior customer service; this has had its payback in a particularly successful voice support programme for the world’s second largest on-line travel company servicing customers out of North America.

As a former French colony, Mauritians also have a historic link to France and the French government; French is generally spoken socially, Parisian French is taught in schools and with a large number of French tourists annually, French proficiency is also required in business.

The Government of Mauritius has intended to make the island a centre of technology and has encouraged IT companies to invest in and train local staff. The relatively high unemployment rate and decline of the sugar cane growing industry led to long term government and private investment in the Call Centre/Business Process Outsourcing industry. This has proved to be a successful strategy. Fifteen years of growth in the Call Centre/Business Process Outsourcing sector has led to the industry being regarded as a prestigious career path on the island.

As far as the technological infrastructure is concerned, Mauritius is connected to the Sub-Oceanic Fibre Service (SAFE) cable system, linking Europe and South Africa with the Far East and has two landing points on the island, providing a bi-directional connectivity with the United States at +-270ms latency. Cable uptime has run at 99.95% since 2003.
